How to Unclog a Slow Draining Toilet

Share

When we flush the toilet, and it doesn’t seem to drain, we’re stuck in a situation that none of us want to be in. How to unclog a slow draining toilet is not an easy task and can take hours or days for someone who isn’t trained to do so correctly. But there are some things you can try before calling a plumber.

How to Unclog a Slow Draining Toilet

In this article, we will learn different methods of unclogging a slow draining toilet.

Hot Water And Liquid Soap

One of the most popular methods of unclogging a slow draining toilet is using hot water and liquid soap. Pour the boiling water into the bowl and then add the liquid soap. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before flushing.

The Plunger

If pouring hot water and soap doesn’t work, you can try using a plunger. A plunger is a great tool for unclogging toilets and can be bought at most hardware stores.

Ensure the plunger is completely covered in water before pushing it down into the drain. Pump the plunger up and down for about 15 seconds before pulling it out.

The Wire Hanger

If you don’t have a plunger or if the plunger doesn’t work, you can use a wire hanger. Straighten the wire and then wrap it around your index finger so that there’s about an inch of space between your fingers.

Push the wire down into the drain until you hear some resistance, which means that it has gone past the clog. Jiggle and twist for a few minutes before pulling out again with the wire still around your finger.

Plumbing Snake

If nothing else works, you can buy a plumbing snake at most hardware stores. It might cost more than the other methods, but it’s highly effective for unclogging toilets that are really plugged up. Push the snake into the drain and twist it around until you feel some resistance.

When you feel the resistance, pull out the snake and cut off the excess with a pair of scissors.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Another popular method for unclogging a slow draining toilet is using baking soda and vinegar. Pour one cup of baking soda into the bowl and then pour two and a half the vinegar over it.

This mixture will create a bubbling reaction. Let it sit for about 20 minutes before flushing.

Enzyme Cleaning Products

One of the more expensive methods is using enzyme cleaning products. These products are specifically designed to break down solids and grease. Pour half a bottle into the bowl, let it sit overnight, then flush in the morning.

Baking Soda And Hot Water

Another method that works really well is using baking soda and hot water. Pour about half of a cup of baking soda down the drain and then follow up with a pot of boiling water.

Let it sit for an hour or two before you try flushing again. It might take several attempts, but this method has been known to work really well in unclogging slow draining toilets.
